# What is Evalingo and how does it work?

> A standardized language assessment that reports a CEFR level from A1 to C2.

Evalingo measures how well someone uses a language, then maps that to the **CEFR scale**, the international standard for language proficiency, running from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near-native).

Instead of a recruiter forming an impression in a five-minute call, every candidate answers the same kinds of questions under the same conditions, and every response is scored against the same criteria.

## How it works

**1. You create an assessment**

Enter the candidate's name and email, and choose what to test and in which language.

**2. They get a private link**

No account, no password, no download. It works on a computer or a phone.

**3. They complete it**

Most assessments take between 5 and 16 minutes per skill.

**4. You get a CEFR level**

With a score breakdown and written feedback, usually within a few minutes.

## What you can test

| Skill | What it covers | Roughly how long |
| - | - | - |
| Speaking | Spoken fluency, pronunciation and range, from recorded answers | 5 to 7 minutes |
| Writing | Written clarity, structure and accuracy | 15 minutes |
| Reading | Understanding of short texts and longer passages | 14 to 16 minutes |
| Listening | Understanding of spoken clips and conversations | 12 to 16 minutes |

You can order one skill on its own or combine them: speaking and writing together, or reading and listening together. Each assessment is **one credit**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Speaking and writing are available in 13 languages. Reading and listening are available in English and German.

## Where it fits

Most teams use Evalingo as a screening step before a human interview, so interview time goes to candidates who clear the language bar. You can send assessments from the dashboard, or [connect your ATS through the API](/integrations/connecting-your-ats.md) so they go out automatically.
