# Integrity checks

> Optional monitoring of how an assessment was sat, reported as observations, never as a verdict.

Integrity checks record how a candidate sat an assessment: whether they left the page, for how long, and similar signals from the browser. Turn them on for a single assessment when you create it, or for every new assessment under **Settings → Defaults**. With the default on, you can still switch them off for one candidate.

## What is recorded

| Signal | What it means |
| - | - |
| Switching away | The candidate left the assessment tab or window, and for how long |
| Paste or drop attempts | Text they tried to paste or drag into an answer (always blocked, see below) |
| Large insertions | A whole paragraph appearing in a single edit |
| Copying the question | The question text was copied |
| Typing | How many keys were pressed and how many corrections made, never what was typed |
| A second display | The computer has more than one screen attached |

Nothing uses a camera, and nothing records the screen.

## Candidates are always told

Before the clock starts, the welcome screen lists exactly what is recorded. There is no silent mode. Being told is also most of what deters anyone.

What a candidate sees before a monitored assessment, using your organization's name.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Pasting into a written answer is turned off for **every** assessment, monitored or not, because it is a rule of the assessment rather than monitoring. Integrity checks decide only whether an attempt to paste is recorded.

## Reading the report

The report sits beside the result on the assessment's **Overview** tab. It lists observations, never a score. It deliberately does not add them up into an "integrity rating", and none of it affects the CEFR level.

![The Integrity panel showing 1 to review: left the assessment for 1m 15s at once, followed by counts for switching away, pastes, bulk insertions, keystrokes, corrections, copying and second display](https://mintcdn.com/evalingo/KjMynU0XLS35WWXs/images/integrity-report.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=KjMynU0XLS35WWXs\&q=85\&s=1896f277f18caed6265742824f91afd3)

One thing called out to review, with every raw count shown beneath it.

That is on purpose. A second screen is a docked laptop far more often than it is a script, and a moment away from the tab is a notification far more often than it is a chatbot. So the thresholds are set to call out only what is clearly unusual, such as being away for over a minute. Brief absences are not recorded at all, and a second display is reported as a fact but never flagged.

Typing speed is never flagged, at any speed. Dictation software is an accessibility tool, and a signal that fired on candidates who dictate would fire on disability.

Use the report as a reason to look more closely, or to ask the candidate about it, not as proof of anything.
